The Benefits Of Exercise

We need to exercise, not only for aesthetic purposes, but more to improve our health and reduce the risk of diseases and illness.

Our bodies are made to move, and as technology advances, we are becoming more sedentary in our lifestyle.

I was brought up in the generation where the kids helped out a lot around the house. There was only one TV and my parents decided what was on it.

  • We were the TV remote. If the channel needed to be changed, we got up to do it.

  • We were the food preparers for dinner. After school, our chores were to peel potatoes, cut up the salads, hammer the meet, cut up the vegetables, set the table.

  • We walked 3km to school and back.

  • We played outside.

  • We took the dog for a walk.

  • We helped cleaned the house.

Back then, our obesity levels were almost half of what they are now.

We didn’t have to think about ‘losing weight’, because moved all the time and it was not an issue.

Now, the obesity levels have become an epidemic and the effects are higher instances of diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and premature death.

We need to MOVE for many reasons:

  1. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  2. To reduce the risk of diabetes.

  3. To prevent osteoporosis.

  4. To reduce the risk of cancer.

  5. To reduce cholesterol.

  6. To improve our muscle strength and co-ordination to prevent falls in old age.

  7. To improve our stress levels and endorphins.

  8. To improve our immune systems.

  9. To improve our confidence and self-esteem.

  10. To improve the aging process and keep us mobile for longer.
